A period room rarely resists technology. It resists the black rectangles, the trailing cables and the glowing standby lights that technology arrives wrapped in. Solve the packaging and most of the supposed conflict between old and new disappears.
The working principles
- Visible technology should be limited to what you actually interact with by hand.
- Existing joinery is the best enclosure you will ever get, and it is already in the right style.
- Light quality carries a traditional room: warm colour temperature, high colour rendering.
- One ecosystem, ideally one that follows an open standard, avoids a drawer of incompatible hubs.
Start by sorting devices into three piles
Before choosing anything, separate what you own into things you touch, things you look at, and things that simply need to exist somewhere. A light switch and a thermostat belong to the first pile and deserve to be well designed, because you will handle them daily. A television belongs to the second. Routers, amplifiers, network storage, chargers and the accumulated adapters belong to the third, and nothing in that pile has any business being visible in a room with cornices.
This sorting does most of the work. It converts a vague ambition to “blend styles” into three specific, solvable briefs: choose well for the first pile, frame or disguise the second, and find enclosed, ventilated storage for the third.
Where each object should actually go
The screen, which is the hardest object in the room
A large television is the single element most likely to defeat a traditional scheme, because nothing about it can be made period. The routes that work are honest ones. Recess it into a chimney breast or an alcove so it sits flush and reads as a panel rather than an object. Put it behind bifold doors in a cabinet built to match the existing joinery. Or accept it and hang it low and centred like a picture, with the media equipment out of the room entirely.
What consistently fails is the mid-height wall bracket in the middle of a decorated wall, with a visible cable run below it. If the cables cannot be chased into the wall, a slim painted trunking that follows an existing architectural line is far less conspicuous than a loop of black cable crossing plasterwork.
Switches, sockets and thermostats
These are the pieces you touch, and they repay real spending. Brass, bronze, nickel and painted metal plates in period patterns are widely available, and a wall of them in the right finish quietly signals that the whole installation was considered. The same applies to socket positions: a socket set into a skirting board or the side of a cabinet is close to invisible compared with one placed mid-wall.
A caution that is not stylistic. Anything involving fixed wiring is regulated work in most jurisdictions and generally requires a qualified electrician and, depending on where you live, a certificate on completion. This is not a scope for improvisation, whatever a product’s marketing suggests about ease of installation.
Speakers and sound
Sound is the easiest category to hide well, because the object does not need to be seen to work. In-ceiling and in-wall drivers behind paintable grilles disappear entirely. Where the ceiling cannot be opened, a single well-made cabinet speaker in a warm finish sits comfortably in a traditional room in a way that a plastic soundbar on a marble mantelpiece never will.
Everything with a standby light
Small glowing indicators are what make a room read as full of equipment, especially at night. A cupboard with a ventilated back panel, a drawer with a cable exit, or a redundant chimney recess fitted with a shelf all solve it at once. Ventilation genuinely matters: equipment in a sealed box runs hot and fails early.
Light is where the two worlds actually meet
Lighting is the one technical layer that changes how a traditional interior feels, rather than merely coexisting with it. Two specifications matter more than the fitting itself. Colour temperature, measured in kelvin, sets the warmth: values around 2700 K read as domestic and evening-appropriate, while cooler outputs push a panelled room towards an office. Colour rendering, expressed as a colour rendering index and commonly quoted as CRI 90 or above on better lamps, determines whether wood, textiles and paintwork keep their depth or go flat and grey.
Dimming is the third variable, and the one most often ruined by a mismatch between lamp and dimmer that produces flicker at low output. Checking that a lamp and its control are specified as compatible is a duller task than choosing a shade, and it has more effect on the finished room.
One ecosystem, chosen deliberately
The clutter that eventually undermines a carefully composed room is rarely a single device. It is the fourth hub, the third app and the collection of adapters that arrive when everything comes from a different manufacturer. Standardising on one ecosystem is a design decision as much as a technical one.
The Matter standard, published by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, exists to make that easier, and it has been moving quickly: version 1.4 arrived in November 2024 with heat pumps, water heaters, solar and battery device types, and version 1.5 followed in November 2025, adding cameras and a unified treatment of closures such as shades, blinds and garage doors. As of 2026, certified support is broad but not universal, so it is a sound reason to prefer certified products rather than a guarantee that any two devices will cooperate.
If the building itself is protected
In a listed, classified or otherwise protected building, some of the interventions above stop being purely aesthetic decisions. Chasing cables into historic plaster, altering original joinery or fixing into decorative fabric can require consent from the relevant heritage authority, and the rules differ substantially between countries and even between municipalities. The reversible options, surface-mounted runs in matching finishes, freestanding rather than built-in enclosures, wireless devices where they are adequate, exist precisely for this situation. Where there is any doubt about a building’s status, the local authority is the place to establish it before work starts, not after.

Two ideas worth stealing
The first is borrowing from industrial design rather than hiding from it. Exposed conduit, blackened steel and visible fixings can be composed deliberately instead of apologetically, which turns a servicing constraint into a decorative language. The second is letting the building tell you where things go. Cornice lines, panel divisions, the rhythm of window openings: these give you the horizontal and vertical lines along which cables, fittings and screens should align. Objects placed on those lines look intentional; objects placed anywhere else look added.

Does hidden technology mean giving up voice control?
No. Microphones and speakers work perfectly well from a shelf or a bookcase, and several ecosystems allow control without a device visible in every room. Coverage is a placement question, not a visibility one.
Is wireless always the better option in an old house?
Not always. It avoids cutting into fabric, which is a genuine advantage, but wired connections remain more reliable for anything carrying video, and thick masonry walls degrade wireless performance more than most people expect.
Can an antique piece be converted to house equipment?
