History of Sandanski city:

This region has been inhabited with trakian tribes from immemorial times i.e. X-XII B.C. Even the ancient antique historians Plinius, Strabon, Tit wrote over it. The ancient trakian were assimilated by the ancient Greeks. This region is in the border of present Macedonia - the native country of Alexander the Greatest and it was conquered by the army of Macedonians. In the III B.C. the power of Macedonia was reduced and in 168 B.C. the Romans conquered Macedonia and who established a Roman province, beside the trakian tribes on the banks of Struma River. Later on the Roman generals joined the river valley to their provinces. In 85 B.C. in one of these campaigns, the trakian Spartacus was captured here in that area. Plutarch found out that Spartacus was a trakian from the tribe of Medic, who lived in the middle part of Struma River. Actually, next door to the present office of Dao Real Estates Company, is located the "Medite" hotel, which was named in the honor of this tribe. In II-III B.C. during the Roman possessions to this territory, a city was established there. It was named Alexandropoulos or Gareskos. In the new Bulgarian history, this city is named St. Vrach and has been one of the main centers of the early Christians' architecture and art. St. Vrach is named in the honor of the two brothers Kosmas and Damian - medical people, the memory of those live still. This region is also famous with the popular predictor of fortune, Vanga, who lived all her life there and cured people with her curative powers. One of the best wines in Bulgaria is being produced in the village of Damianica, only 3 kilometers away from Sandanski city.
