The town of Sandanski - one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria, is situated in southwestern Bulgaria at an altitude of 240 above sea level, close to the feet of the mountain Pirin, on both banks of the river Sandanska Bistritsa, flowing down from the mountain. It is located near the international autoroute E79 Sofia-Athens some 20 km to the north from the border with Greece (checkpoint Kulata), and some 160 km to the south from Sofia.

Sandanski is an ancient town has a thousand years' history. Thracians abode it, as well as Romans and Slavs. So it was given different names: Medius, Dizudava, Holy Healers. Underneath modern Sandanski are the ruins of an old town, that was built close to the mineral springs in the 2nd century B.C. The famous Spartakus originated from the thracian tribe “MEDI”, which populated these lands. Spartakus led the biggest riot (74 A.D.) in the Roman Empire. Until the 6th century A.D. the town was one of the first centres of Christianity in Bulgaria, but at the end of 6th century it has been entirely destoyed by barbaric invaders. Since 1949 it took the name of a Bulgarian revolutionary, a fighter for the liberation of Macedonia from the Turkish yoke - Janne Sandanski.

The town of Sandanski is famous with it's sights. Those of most interest are the Archeological museum, the church "St. George" (from 1861), the town gallery of arts, art gallery "Likin", the Rozhen monastery and sacred area “Roupite” with the temple of the world-famous Bulgarian healer Vanga.
